Compliance Assistance Surrounding the New Employment Laws in Minnesota

Following the most recent legislative session in Minnesota, there have been a number of significant changes to employment laws, which will require nearly all Minnesota employers to make some changes to their policies and practices. Here are some of the major changes (click the links to learn more):

  • The use of non-compete provisions in employment-related agreements is now prohibited (effective July 1, 2023).
  • The new law that legalized the recreational use of Cannabis in Minnesota also places certain limitations on workplace policies and drug testing practices.
  • Sick and Safe Time will be required for almost all Minnesota employees (effective January 1, 2024).
  • Paid Family and Medical Leave will be required for almost all Minnesota employees (effective January 1, 2026 with some actions required in 2024).

Natolie Hochhausen and the rest of our HR & Employment Team have been doing an excellent job helping clients understand the impact of these changes on their business, and the team has been assisting with policy and agreement revisions. For example, Natolie has been conducting roundtable discussions and presentations with business leaders throughout the State of Minnesota to talk through what is required of employers under the new laws. Click here for a great discussion by one of our industry partners regarding the type of presentations that our team has been conducting for businesses, and they can provide similar programming for your organization.
