Bob Fafinski Discusses The Ryder Cup

In 2012, FMJ co-founder Bob Fafinski was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Ryder Cup, which is charged with the responsibility of running the 2016 Ryder Cup at Bob’s home course, Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. We thought our readers might be interested in getting updates from Bob throughout 2016 about what it is like to be involved in organizing golf’s greatest team contest. Here are some fun facts about the Ryder Cup:

  • The Ryder Cup is contested between a team of 12 players from the United States and 12 players from Europe and rotates back and forth between a host site in the United States and Europe every two years. Therefore, the Ryder Cup is only held in the United States every four years.
  • In the United States, the Ryder Cup has never been contested at the same host site twice. The Ryder Cup has never come to Minnesota and is unlikely to return here during our lifetimes.
  • Hazeltine expects to host more than 250,000 people during Ryder Cup week. Ryder Cup week is Sept. 27 – Oct. 2, 2016.
  • The merchandise tent at the Ryder Cup will be almost 47,000 square feet – roughly half the size of a Target store.
  • More than 4,000 volunteers will be needed to host the Ryder Cup – that’s roughly 167 volunteers per player.
  • The contestants do not play for prize money.
  • It’s been said that getting a ticket to the Ryder Cup is the hardest ticket in sports to obtain. In fact, all general admission tickets have already been purchased. At this point, the only way to still obtain a ticket to the Ryder Cup is to purchase a corporate table of 10 located within a chalet.

If anyone is interested in information about purchasing a corporate table, feel free to contact Bob at robert.fafinski@fmjlaw.com, and he will direct you to the PGA sales staff for more information.
