# Compliance Assistance Surrounding the New Employment Laws in Minnesota

Following the most recent legislative session in Minnesota, there have been a number of significant changes to employment laws, which will require nearly all Minnesota employers to make some changes to their policies and practices. Here are some of the major changes (click the links to learn more):

- The use of [**non-compete provisions**](https://www.fmjlaw.com/minnesota-becomes-the-fourth-state-to-ban-non-competes/) in employment-related agreements is now prohibited (effective July 1, 2023).

- The new law that legalized the recreational use of [**Cannabis**](https://www.fmjlaw.com/legalized-cannabis-in-minnesota-what-does-this-mean-for-employers/) in Minnesota also places certain limitations on workplace policies and drug testing practices.

- [**Sick and Safe Time**](https://www.fmjlaw.com/all-minnesota-employers-will-now-be-required-to-provide-sick-and-safe-time-to-employees-what-does-this-mean-for-your-business/) will be required for almost all Minnesota employees (effective January 1, 2024).

- [**Paid Family and Medical Leave**](https://www.fmjlaw.com/minnesotas-new-paid-family-and-medical-leave-program-what-does-this-mean-for-your-business/) will be required for almost all Minnesota employees (effective January 1, 2026 with some actions required in 2024).
