New Rules of Civil Procedure for Minnesota State Courts

Beginning in July, new rules of civil procedure for Minnesota state courts will be in place, which aim to increase access to the courts.

How? It all boils down to increased efficiency in the court system and an eye on proportionality between the value of a case, resources of the parties, and time and expense that should be dedicated to resolving a dispute. Pre-trial discovery will be more focused and efficient, leading to cost savings, especially in relatively simple or low dollar-value cases. Moreover, parties can reasonably expect to have their day in court in a much shorter time frame than what has been historically possible.

Ultimately, this means that small and medium-sized businesses with relatively low dollar-value cases ($30-$150k) will have greater access to the courts without the fear of spending more money and time than the case is worth.
